Meeting Time And Place: July 8 at 6pm
at the Home of Peter & Marissa Macasieb
Our July meeting will once again be hosted by Peter and Marissa Macasieb at their home in West Covina (directions available on our website here) due to a concert conflict at the Arboretum.  The meeting will start at 6:00pm, so we get the maximum amount of daylight for our outdoor adventure.  We are anticipating a good crowd, but there will be plenty of room for all.

We will follow our regular meeting format with a demonstration by Peter and a raffle that will include the demo tree.  Peter will be working on an exciting piece of material that will make his demo arguably the best of the year.  He has an old prostrata juniper which he grafted with Itoigawa juniper four years ago. He has done carving on the trunk in advance to  create shari.  Don’t miss out on a chance to take home a future masterpiece.

Refreshments will consist of a potluck meal.  The main dishes and beverages will be provided by the club and Marissa.  We ask that members bring a side dish, salad, or dessert.  We are looking forward to a fun summer evening.  See you there.

President’s Corner

I have received questions recently about automatic watering systems to keep our trees alive when we are away from home for extended periods.  We should not feel trapped at home because we are afraid to leave our trees alone.  I hope we all have some mechanism in place for watering so we can travel without fear of losing our trees.

One of the simplest solutions is having someone who will water for you.  Of course, they have to be reliable and know how to water properly.  Another option, if you already have an automatic sprinkler system for your yard, is to spread your trees around the yard where the sprinklers will do the watering.  Finally, you can set up a drip and /or a spray watering system, complete with timer, to specifically   water your trees.  There are many hydroponic and sprinkler supply businesses out there which have the components necessary to set up a system.  The internet and old-fashioned phone books are sources for these businesses.  Word-of-mouth and information sharing with each other are probably the best sources of all.

Members Corner

Long-time club member Barbara Wright rejoined again this year with a generous donation. She currently lives in Middlesboro, Kentucky, but enjoys keeping up with club news.  She still practices the art of bonsai with her collection of trees.  Thank you, Barbara.

June Highlights

In lieu of our regular June meeting, we were invited to attend the annual Descanso Bonsai Society show reception.  Many of our members attended, including those who also belong to the Descanso club and entered trees in the show.  Our members with trees exhibited were Marge and Ray Blasingame, Emma Janza, Gonzalo Rodriguez, Peter Macasieb, Jim Barrett, and Jim Pelling.

The Descanso club provided a nice variety of food and beverages for all.  Looking at the beautiful show trees and socializing made for a very enjoyable evening.  Thank you to all members who helped support the Descanso Bonsai Society with their attendance.
