Our July 11 meeting will be at the home of Peter and Marissa Macasieb.  A concert at the Arboretum prevents us from meeting there.  The Macasiebs have graciously made their home available to us, so we can continue to meet.  We have done this before, and it was a nice change to our routine.  For those that don’t know, Peter’s backyard is like a bonsai nursery.   He has a tremendous collection on display that we can wander through and enjoy trees in various stages of development. In addition, I’m sure Peter will talk to us about his collection and his training techniques.  As before, it will be a great chance to get together, socialize, and see some great bonsai. Join us for a fun evening.

President’s Corner

It’s time to register for the Golden State Bonsai Federation (GSBF) convention.  The convention will be held at the Riverside Convention Center, October 29 – November 1.  Information and registration packets can be obtained at the GSBF convention website; www.gsbfconvention.org

At the GSBF Convention this year the headliners are Bjorn Bjorhelm and John Wang.  Guest Artists will be David Nguy and Tak Shimazu.  Our own Peter Macasieb will be hosting a workshop on trident maple shohin.

The convention will include seminars, critiques, workshops, a large sales area, and a bonsai exhibit.  There will also be raffles and auctions.  Check out the website, and put this event on your calendar.

On another note, our weather has heated up, typical for our summer.  We are all under some form of watering restrictions, depending on where you live.  That doesn’t mean we are going to let our trees dry out, but there are some things we can do to be more water efficient.  Shade cloth can help cut down on the amount of sun hitting our trees and slow the drying process. You can put your shohin, pot and all, in a tray with gravel to help retain moisture.  Products like ”Cloud Cover” can be used to coat foliage so there is less transpiration.  However, my trees will still get whatever water they need.

June Highlights

We had a good turnout in June to show support for the Descanso Bonsai Society show. It was nice to see so many familiar faces as we enjoyed the show, the food, and the socializing.

Many of our members are also members of Descanso.  There were trees from Marge and Ray Blasingame, Peter Macasieb, Emma Janza, Jim Pelling, and Jim Barrett.

The highlight of the evening was the raffle and auction.  Many of the auction trees went for high prices, which benefitted Descanso a great deal.  All of our clubs rely on show income to help sustain us.  I know they appreciated our participation.
