Bonsai Notebook

Our guest for the February meeting will be Fred Miyahara. Fred comes to us from the San Diego area where he is the club sensei and past president of the San Diego Bonsai Club. He is also a member of Nampu Kai and the California Bonsai Society. Fred has done workshops at both the GSBF convention and the Shohin Seminar. He is well known for his work with Japanese black pine and also for his grafting expertise. He studied grafting with Mas Ishii and has perfected his talents over many years. At our meeting, Fred will demonstrate grafting techniques on both junipers and black pine. He will be donating a grafted tree to the raffle that has been growing successfully for several years. Join us for another informative club event. Meeting Time And Place: February 10, 2018 at 7pm LAC Arboretum/ Palm Room

President’s Corner

Welcome to the new year and a full schedule of demonstrations and our up-coming annual show. This is also the time of year when we ask members to promptly renew their memberships to help keep the club operational. Many already did so at our December potluck, and we look forward to more renewals now. This month includes the Bonsai-A-Thon at the Huntington, Feb. 24-25. This annual event is a fund raiser to support the GSBF bonsai collection at the Huntington and is an opportunity to stock up on supplies for the repotting season. The Bonsai-A –Thon includes lots of bonsai stock for sale, demonstrations, vendors, and a daily auction and raffle. You will find a Bonsai-A-Thon flyer in the newsletter with all the important information as well as a name badge to use for free admission to the event. You can make copies for guests. I want to again thank Jim Pelling for volunteering to take over the raffle duties this year. We could not function as a club without the help of members like Jim helping out. Thanks also to Ray Blasingame for his many years as our raffle chairman. His service was very much appreciated. Gabriel Gonzalez has already booked demonstrations for the entire year. He did an outstanding job in a short period of time, and the club appreciates his efforts. I am sure you will all enjoy what we have scheduled. ~Dave

December Meeting Highlights

We had to move our annual holiday potluck to December, but in spite of the change, we had a good turnout. The food was outstanding, thanks to the generosity of our members, and we had a wonderful time socializing during a great family time of year. Our raffle table was full of bonsai stock and related items, so Christmas came early for many. Thanks to all our members for a memorable 2017!

SABS Announcements

This is just a gentle reminder that it’s now time to renew your 2018 membership for SABS. A special thank you to all of you who have already renewed for this year. Our membership dues are vital to SABS remaining financially viable. The dues for each year are due in January. Past members who have not yet renewed are encouraged to do so at this time. If you joined SABS during Oct-Dec 2017 then your membership is current until Dec 2018 . It has been exciting to see how SABS’s membership has grown during the past year. Thanks for your participation and support. The SABS Newsletter is one of the “perks” of belonging to our club. When your membership is not renewed annually by the end of March 2018 the membership lapses and you are no longer eligible to receive this newsletter directly via email and/or US Mail. The newsletter will always be available on our website www.sabonsai.org
