Bonsai Notebook
The July meeting will feature Frank Goya and his famous talent for designing saikai, or living landscapes. Frank is known as one of the top bonsai artists in our country and as the “dean” of saikai.
Frank was born in California, was interred during World War II, and then served in the U.S. Army for three years. He worked as a professional gardener and started to learn about bonsai and saikai. One of his saikai compositions is on display at the National Arboretum in Washington, D. C.
Frank has been involved with bonsai and saikai for over 50 years. Come and see how he designs and develops a saikai at the July meeting. Maybe you will take home a masterpiece and a part of saikai history.
The Presidents Corner…
Although October is a few months away, registration for the 2014 Golden State Bonsai Federation Convention started on July 1. The convention will be held in Sacramento this year, and will be co-hosted by The American Bonsai Society. Registration information and forms can be found on the GSBF website: http://www.gsbf-bonsai.org/convention/.
Our club is one of 73 statewide that make up the GSBF, which exists to work and support the individuals and member clubs within California. We are fortunate to have one of the two GSBF sponsored bonsai collections in our backyard at The Huntington. Several of our SABS members are involved with helping to maintain this collection, including Bob Alstrom, and Ray and Marge Blasingame.
This year’s GSBF convention features many exciting events and workshops. It’s a great opportunity to commune with fellow bonsai artists and learn from some of the best talents in the world.
