Our featured demonstrator for the February 11 meeting will be Al Nelson.  Al’s presentations are always entertaining and informative, so be ready to take notes!  He will be showing us how to develop a saikei  or landscape design.  As usual, the product of his efforts will go home with a lucky raffle winner.
Al is a native Californian, born in Berkeley.  He moved to southern California in 1960.  His first profession was woodworking, followed by a long career in sales.

2017-02-Img01 Al attended a demonstration by the late John Naka in the late 1970’s and was inspired to take up the bonsai art.  He studied with Harry Hirao, John Naka and Ernie Kuo.  Al currently teaches bonsai at his home in Irvine.  Come to the February meeting and enjoy the evening.

Meeting Time And Place:
February 11 at 7pm

President’s Corner

What a great rainy season we have had so far.  The fresh rain has flushed all the salts from our tap water out of our tree soil.  It should make for a robust spring. Now is the time to prepare our soil mixes and decide which of our trees need repotting this year.  If you stopped fertilizing the last couple of winter months,  it is a good time to reintroduce your favorite fertilizer.  With our short winters, trees will use the fertilizer to help begin pushing new growth.

The annual Bonsai-A-Thon is coming up later this month (see details later in the newsletter).  It is always a great event beginning a new bonsai year; how-to demonstrations, a wide variety of trees for sale, a large vendor, and an exhibit.  Come and stock up on all your bonsai needs and help support the Golden State Bonsai Federation collection at the Huntington.

This is just a gentle reminder that it’s now time to renew your 2017 membership for SABS. A special thank you to all of you who have  already renewed for this year.  Our membership dues are vital to SABS remaining financial viable.  The dues for each year are due in January. Past members who have not yet renewed are encouraged to do so at this time.  If you joined SABS during Oct-Dec 2016 then your membership is current until Dec 2017.   It has been exciting to see how SABS’s membership has grown during the past year. Thanks for your participation and support.

Members Corner

The club history that has been chronicled here was written in 1999 by member Jerry McNey celebrating the club’s 35th year.  To paraphrase Jerry for today; It is now our responsibility, 53 years after the beginning to maintain the dedication and strength shown by our founders.

If you have any favorite bonsai stories or photos, historical or otherwise, for this Members Corner, contact Dave & Lorraine at [email protected].

January Meeting Highlights

Our annual potluck dinner provided a wonderful start to the new year.  We were fortunate to have our club co-founder Jim Barrett in attendance with his wife Helen.  Jim honored us by swearing in our club officers for their new term.

Thank to our membership for the great food contributed for the dinner.  We had a good variety, and there was plenty for all. Thanks also to the raffle donors. We had a full table, and everything found a new home.

It was a wonderful surprise for Dave to receive this incredible table from the SABS for his past  2+ terms as Club President.  It has special meaning for many reasons and knowing that it was from Bill & Lois Hutchinson makes it absolutely invaluable. Thank you from Dave and the Miles family for all the memories and friendships we have made thru SABS… Lorraine
