Bonsai Notebook

2014-04-Img01John Nielson will be with us for a demonstration at the April Meeting. He is a licensed arborist and has 30 years experience with bonsai. As an arborist, John is certified in pest management, irrigation systems and tree injection.  John obviously has a lot to share regarding the care and maintenance of our trees along with his

talent in bonsai styling. He has studied with Harry Hairo, Mel Ikeda and Tak Shimazu. Come and enjoy the program, and plan to ask questions about tree care.

Meeting Time and Place:
April 12, 2014 at 7pm
LAC Arboretum, Palm Room

President’s Corner…..

Our club show is next month and fast approaching. The theme is Flowering/ Fruiting Trees.  We’ll be looking for volunteers at the next two (2) meetings to help with set-up and supervision during the show. We also need volunteers for the daily demonstrations. Entering a theme tree is desired, but as always, not required.

If you haven’t shown a tree before, I hope you will consider it this year.  I know that first show is a difficult step. We’ve all been there.  We worry whether our trees are worthy of display.  More often than not, our trees are better than we sometimes think.  Bring your potential show tree to the April or May meeting and get free feedback.  If I’ve learned nothing else, I Know bonsai people are very supportive of each other.  It’s a great feeling to walk into the show and see your own work on display.

March Meeting Highlights

Our club co-founder, Jim Barrett, put his styling talent to work on a rare San Jose juniper.  Jim explained his work on the tree as he progressed and also shared some bonsai lore.  He described the different tree size categories: shito, fingertip size pot; mame, up to 4 inches in height; shohin, 8-9 inches tall; kifu, 9-20 inches; and dai, up to 4 feet.

Jim threw in bits of Japanese history and tales of Japanese bonsai artists.  His demo tree had good trunk movement, and he styled the juniper as an informal upright.  Talking as he worked kept our interest throughout, and the finished tree, kifu size, was a prize we all wanted.  Judy Anthony was the lucky winner of the tree, a nice addition to her collection.
